A SMALL START · FREE GUIDE

Choose a focus sound.
Or choose silence.

A sound can be pleasant and still pull your attention away from the task. Instead of hunting for a “best” sound, compare two choices with the same small piece of work.

Start with one task

Write something specific: “read this paragraph” or “outline the next email.” Pick two sounds you can already play, or compare one sound with silence. This page does not play audio.

Open the free web timer

The web timer is separate from the app’s sound player. No purchase or app install is needed to read this guide.

Compare A, then B

  1. Set a comfortable, low volume. Keep the room, headphones and task as similar as practical. Do not turn the volume up to cover a noisy room.
  2. Try A for a short stretch. Use a length that fits your task. Notice comfort and whether you keep listening to the sound instead of doing the work.
  3. Take a quiet pause, then try B. Keep the same comparison length. Silence is a valid option, not a failed experiment.
  4. Keep a small note. Which felt more comfortable? Which drew your attention? You can choose neither.

Task: outline the next email

A: sound name · comfort · attention

B: sound name or silence · comfort · attention

Next time: A / B / silence / undecided

These are examples to copy into your own notes, not user results. This page has no comparison form and does not save your notes.

A preference check, not proof

The second try may feel different because you are already familiar with the task, tired or interrupted. If useful, try the opposite order another day. One comparison cannot show that a sound improves focus, treats a condition or works best for everyone.

If a sound feels uncomfortable, stop using it. Apple’s sound and hearing guidance explains why there is no single volume setting for every listener and headphone setup. This is not a hearing test or medical advice.

OPTIONAL APP · iOS 1.0.16

Five additions, not the full sound list

The iOS 1.0.16 update describes brown, pink and white noise, a ship’s clock with a 60 BPM tick, and deep-sea binaural alongside the existing sea sounds. These five additions are not the entire app sound catalogue. Earphones are recommended for the binaural option. These are product labels, not a ranking of benefits.

Find them under Settings → White noise. You can also switch sounds from the voyage screen while a voyage is running. This guide does not verify Android feature parity or the audio quality of each choice.

Update · 15 October 2026: added App Store and Google Play links. The comparison steps and the iOS 1.0.16 facts are unchanged.

Correction · 9 October 2026: the earlier “five choices” wording could be read as the full app sound list. It now distinguishes the additions from the existing sea sounds. The comparison steps and no-audio, optional-app limits are unchanged.
